argumento
Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) é um cidadão de um país de Leste que vai a caminho de Nova Iorque, nos Estados Unidos. Mas quando desembarca no aeroporto internacional JFK, descobre que rebentou uma guerra civil no seu país e houve um golpe de Estado. Viktor vê-se dessa forma sem pátria e sem um passaporte válido (pois é um passaporte de um país que deixou de existir!). Não tem assim autorização para entrar nos Estados Unidos, mas também ninguém o obriga a sair. E Viktor começa então a improvisar os seus dias e as suas noites no terminal do aeroporto, um enorme complexo onde se cruzam todas as facetas da América e onde ele também descobre o amor junto de uma bela hospedeira de bordo (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
"Terminal do Aeroporto", último filme de Steven Spielberg, é inspirado num caso bem real: o de Merhan Karim Nasseri - ou Alfred, como é conhecido no Aeroporto Charles de Gaulle, em Paris. Merhan é um cidadão iraniano, exilado político depois de se ter manifestado contra o Xá do Irão nos anos 70. Em 1988, não consegue entrar em Londres por ter apenas uma fotocópia do passaporte e é expulso para Paris, local onde embarcara. Aí, sucedem-se uma série de absurdos burocráticos e Merhan começa a aprender a viver no aeroporto, entre pilotos, hospedeiras, empregados de cafés e restaurantes. Em 1999, quando a Bélgica se interessa pelo seu caso e resolve dar-lhe um passaporte válido, Alfred já não quer sair do aeroporto.
